Job Introduction

BBC Children in Need believes that every child and young person in the UK is able to thrive and be the best they can be. We act where the need is greatest and our ambition is to create positive and lasting change for those children and young people who need us most. We are 2 years into delivering our new five year ambition and strategy for children and young people and it’s an exciting time to join the charity.

The Content Team at BBC Children In Need (CiN) works alongside multiple broadcast partners to deliver a wide range of fundraising and impactful content, often involving high profile talent, to create memorable national coverage which resonates with audiences. This includes network content such as The Challenge Squad for The One Show, Radio 2’s Ultra Ultramarathon Challenge with Vernon Kay, Countryfile Rambles, Blue Peter Specials and the DIYSOS Big Build, through to showcasing the work we do in grassroots communities throughout the Nations and Regions of the UK.

We’re undergoing a review of our Content Proposition to continue to ensure we remain relevant and contemporary and are able to successfully engage new opportune audiences alongside our core supporters. We are moving from being an organisation who shows up once a year in November to an organisation that is ‘always on’ and uses our unique platform to celebrate, champion and support children and young people all year round.

We are looking for someone who is creative, self-motivated, resilient and passionate about the causes we support. They will work alongside our team of Editors, Senior Producers and Researchers to help to generate fundraising and awareness-raising programming right across the BBC, on all platforms. Reporting to a Content Editor, they will develop and support the delivery of content, ensuring that it achieves the highest creative and editorial standards, delivers on time and on budget, with adherence to BBC guidelines.

Main Responsibilities

  • To work alongside colleagues on the Content Team to execute a variety of fundraising and awareness raising projects with BBC programmes.
  • To work with BBC production teams across TV, radio and digital platforms, providing editorial and practical support to help them deliver CiN-related content.
  • To project manage activities, ensuring that all partners are aware of deadlines/key milestones that need to be met and motivating partners if necessary
  • To source contributors to feature in content, in particular children and young people who are supported by the organisations that we fund
  • To collaborate closely with internal CiN colleagues to help maximise the fundraising and awareness of Children in Need and to meet the charity’s campaign objectives
  • To be a professional ambassador for the Charity when having meetings with stakeholders, working at events and visiting organisations funded by CiN.
  • To help deliver CiN’s commitment to Diversity, Equality and Inclusion in every aspect of the role
  • To understand the social issues facing children and young people in the UK today.
  • To demonstrate knowledge of BBC Editorial Policy guidelines and to be familiar with specific charity guidance.
  • To be accountable for working within the BBC Legal and Health & Safety policies and guidelines.

Are you the right Candidate?

  • Experience as a Content Producer in TV, radio or on digital platforms
  • Proven casting skills – particularly with child contributors
  • The ability to identify a strong story and understand how it could be developed into impactful content across multiple platforms
  • Experience of working with children/young people and a comprehensive knowledge of relevant safeguarding considerations
  • Experience of delivering complex projects, shoots or events involving multiple stakeholders
  • Demonstrable ability to make sound editorial judgement calls, especially in relation to sensitive situations and a thorough knowledge of BBC Editorial Guidelines
  • An understanding of current digital and social platforms – ideally with experience of creating successful content for them
  • Ability to establish effective short and long term relationships with a wide range of colleagues, talent, partners and agencies.
  • The ability to work to fixed deadlines, set your own deadlines and motivate yourself to long-lead deadlines.
  • Strong inter-personal skills, emotional resilience and the capability to deal with sensitive issues using diplomacy and discretion
  • An appreciation of the issues that CiN is raising money and awareness for
  • A good understanding of BBC content and audiences in a variety of genres and a grasp of how the BBC operates across Nations and Regions
  • Ability to manage several areas of work at one time, prioritizing and delivering consistently to deadlines and reacting positively to changes and conflicting priorities, whilst maintaining standards of accuracy

Desirable but not necessary:

  • Experience of working with vulnerable children, young people and families
  • Experience of working or volunteering with a charity
  • Experience of creating and producing successful fundraising campaigns for a charity
  • Familiarity with BBC talent and experience of working with them
  • Production of audio/visual content for use on digital platforms
  • Experience of working on large-scale events
