ATTENTION - The importance of recognition in the fight against inequality, powerlessness and division
Poverty is not just a loss of income.
Poverty is always associated with a loss of social status.
In the history of poverty discourses, the respective loser groups of a fundamental social change have always been blamed, insulted and devalued for their worsened economic situation. In this arena of the struggle for recognition, the accompanying consequences of social decline come to light: social disqualification, hurt feelings of justice, experiences of powerlessness.
The 11th Austrian Poverty Conference focuses on the spiral of devaluation and the struggle for recognition, appreciation and dignity. It draws on a long tradition of theoretical contributions and debates in poverty and distribution research and refers to the direct experiences of people experiencing poverty and exclusion.
The connections between a lack of recognition, fears of social decline and the increase in socially perceptible aggression are also examined.
especially towards so-called marginalized groups.
How can we combine a policy of redistribution with a policy of social recognition?
