Earth Observation (GIS) Team Manager (f/m/x)

Starting as soon as possible | 30 – 40 hours incl. paid lunch break | unlimited | based in Vienna

The Earth Observation (EO) team in Vienna is part of the MSF GIS (Geographic information Systems) Center, which provides value-added support and services to MSF operations through the visualization and analysis of geospatial data. The primary responsibility of the EO Team is the provision of satellite imagery and associated analysis to the movement, including feature extractions (e.g., buildings, water, floods) and damage assessments. The team is part of the wider MSF Austria Operational Support Unit. In your role as Earth Observation Team Manager (f/m/x) you lead a team of two EO experts and you manage various partners outside of MSF-Austria. You are responsible for the coordination of the daily provision of all EO products and services, ensuring timely and quality interaction with partners and users.

  • A minimum annual salary of € 60,800.00 gross p.a. with the option of overpayment up to a maximum of €72,900. – gross p.a. if you bring relevant position-related qualifications and professional experience that go beyond the requirements profile. You will also receive monthly child allowance for dependent children.

What you BRING along

  • You have a university degree in GIS and bring minimum 5 years of experience in in a relevant GIS field, bringing substantial knowledge about GIS and the principles of remote sensing, preferably in an NGO. You bring a proven track record in collaborative team leadership and stakeholder management.
  • You bring proven project management capacity and feel comfortable responding to changing priorities on a daily basis. At the same time, you also maintain a long term vision, having excellent organizational and analytical skills, experience planning R&D completes your portfolio
  • You have experience with ArcGIS suite (Desktop, Enterprise, Portal and ArcGIS Online) or QGIS and enterprise GIS alternatives as well as imagery software. You have basic knowledge of Python, FME or another relevant programming language.
  • Experience with humanitarian geospatial communities, actors and networks is a plus.
  • You are motivated to work in and with multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.
  • You are highly committed to MSF, its values, and principles.

  • You ensure the completeness and quality of EO requests as per the expected standards of MSF field operations and coordinate the EO sub-stream Plan of Action (Planning, follow-up) and manage budget. You substitute team members in case of their absence.
  • in addition to management, you will be working hands on in delivering analysis and products for our operations, based on your technical skills.
  • You manage MSF Vienna contractual GIS partnerships and liaise with internal and external partners, fostering positive connections and ensuring effective communication and alignment.
  • You liaise with the GIS Director to align plans and priorities, ensuring that user needs are met.
  • You participate in regular extended Management Meetings, providing short overviews on advancements and present advancements and achieved goals to respective working groups, such as the GIS week, MSF-AT board and others.
  • You deepen and strengthen MSF Austria’s understanding of GIS and remote sensing potential, pushing it one step further.
  • You foster knowledge transfer to update our GIS colleagues in the field via webinars or meetings, such as the GIS week.
