Volunteers wanted! Volunteering in Germany

More and more people in Germany are volunteering, and not just since the major migration movements in 2015. Back then, many people helped refugees, whether as helpers at initial reception centers, at the federal borders or at train stations.

This commitment has changed over time and needs have changed. Numerous people are still active, advising people who have experienced flight, learning German with them and initiating projects that bring different groups in society closer together.

However, the opportunities for volunteering in Germany extend far beyond working with refugees. Many associations - the volunteer fire department, the Red Cross - are supported by a large number of volunteers. Without them, their work would not be possible. Even though large NGOs and social organizations naturally also employ paid staff, they still offer many areas of responsibility for volunteers.

The activities range from visiting senior citizens, managing social media pages, walking dogs from animal shelters, organizing events or learning assistance for children to database support for non-profits. Online volunteering is also becoming increasingly popular.

Motivation

Volunteer work may not be paid, but the social commitment of the volunteers is extremely valuable. Not only disadvantaged people benefit from it, but the volunteers also get a lot back from this work. For young people, for example, volunteering can help them find their way when choosing a career. They can also discover and hone their own skills and gain a wealth of experience.

TIP from NGOJobs.eu: Always have your volunteer work confirmed in writing by the NGO/association and include this certificate in your personal portfolio!

Volunteering is also a good way for those who want to work full-time in an NGO later on to get started. You get the opportunity to get to know the day-to-day work in a non-profit organization, take on responsibility and pursue your own interests and passions at the same time.

TIP from NGOJobs.eu: Mention your voluntary work and the skills you have acquired through it in job interviews! This shows initiative, motivation and your ability to take on responsibility.

Activities and requirements

The activities vary greatly depending on the organization and field of work. Special qualifications are not usually required. Everyone can get involved in their own way, depending on their personal skills and interests. Sometimes language skills can be an advantage, sometimes non-profits specifically look for volunteers who already have experience in certain areas (e.g. public relations, IT).

Where can I find the right volunteer position?

Of course, it is important that your valuable time is well invested. Take your time when looking for a suitable voluntary activity and communicate clearly to the organization how much time you can invest and what you are interested in. Many clubs are particularly happy to have volunteers who can commit to at least 6 months.

Volunteer fairs

In several federal states, there are now volunteer fairs/exchanges where NGOs and associations are guests and you can find out first-hand which volunteers they are looking for. Such a fair is practical because you can get to know numerous non-profit organizations in one day and easily find a suitable volunteer position.
