There are many different ways to volunteer in Austria - the tasks of volunteers range from German tutoring for refugees to visits to retirement homes and public relations work for various humanitarian and ecological organizations. Online volunteering is also becoming increasingly popular.
Motivation
Anyone who wants to take on social responsibility and help their fellow human beings or the environment has countless opportunities to become active and do voluntary work. In this way, everyone can contribute to shaping and positively changing the society in which we live.
Ehrenamtliche Arbeit ist zwar nicht bezahlt, doch das soziale Engagement der Helfer:innen ist äußerst wertvoll. Nicht nur benachteiligte People profitieren davon, auch die Freiwilligen bekommen viel von dieser Tätigkeit zurück. Für junge People kann ehrenamtliche Arbeit beispielsweise eine Hilfe bei der Orientierung bei der Berufswahl sein. Weiters können eigene Kompetenzen entdeckt und geschärft und viele Erfahrungen gesammelt werden.

For those interested in working in an NGO on a long-term basis, volunteering is a good way to get started. Getting involved in your free time means taking on responsibility and pursuing your own passions and interests. These skills are also a great advantage in interviews for paid jobs and can be decisive for a successful career, especially in the non-profit sector. In addition, contact with people from different age groups and cultures offers the opportunity for mutual exchange and broadening of horizons.
Last but not least, many non-profit organizations have limited resources and are therefore dependent on voluntary work to implement their projects.
Activities and requirements
The activities vary greatly depending on the organization and field of work. Special qualifications are not usually required. Everyone can contribute in their own way, depending on their personal skills and interests.
Where can I find the right job for me?
Fairs
There are now volunteer fairs in several federal states where NGOs and associations are guests and you can find out first-hand which volunteers they are looking for. Such a fair is practical because you can get to know numerous non-profit organizations in one day and easily find a suitable volunteer position.
- Vienna
Jedes Jahr im Herbst (Ende September/Anfang Oktober) finden die Freiwilligenmesse in Wien statt.
- Lower Austria
Seit 2016 gibt es auch eine Freiwilligenmesse in St. Pölten, Termin ist meist im Winter (November).
- Tirol
Auch in Tirols Landeshauptstadt Innsbruck gibt es für Freiwillige die Gelegenheit, sich ausführlich zu informieren. Messetermin der Freiwilligen Messe Tirol ist meist im November.
- Vorarlberg
aha Plus, was ist das? aha plus ist ein Anerkennungssystem für Jugendliche in Vorarlberg, die sich freiwillig engagieren. 12- bis 24-Jährige, die sich über die normale Mitgliedschaft hinaus in einem Verein, einer Organisation, Initiative oder der Gemeinde einbringen, können mit aha plus Punkte (Points) für ihr Engagement sammeln, die wiederum gegen eine wertvolle Anerkennung (Rewards) eingelöst werden können. Mit dem aha plus Nachweis können Jugendliche ihre gesammelten Erfahrungen nachweisen und so ihre Chancen für Job und Ausbildung steigern. Mehr Infos: www.ahaplus.at
Viele NGOs und Vereine bieten außerdem Infoveranstaltungen oder konkrete Ausschreibungen für Ehrenämter an und haben meist eine:n Anprechpartner:in für Freiwilligenarbeit. Natürlich gibt es auch zahlreiche Plattformen im Internet, die einen guten Überblick über ehrenamtliche Arbeit liefern.
