Who We Are

The Herbert C. Kelman Institute for Interactive Conflict Transformation (HKI) is an independent, non-profit organization based in Vienna, Austria, founded in 2005. We are committed to building inclusive and sustainable peace through a dialogical approach and long-term relationship-building in regions affected by conflict, based on an approach of Interactive Conflict Transformation.

The institute is named after Vienna-born Harvard University Professor, Herbert C. Kelman, a scholar-practitioner and a pioneer of conflict resolution research and practice. The Kelman Institute honors his legacy and his commitment to peace.

Our Vision

We believe in stakeholders and communities transforming conflict through empathy, creativity, and nonviolence – shaping just, inclusive futures across all levels of society.

What We Do

We support individuals, communities, and institutions to engage in constructive dialogue and find new possibilities for overcoming deep-rooted divisions.

Our work focuses on:

  • Designing and facilitating dialogical processes for conflict parties and stakeholders
  • Capacity-building and training in conflict transformation and conflict sensitivity

Our Approach

At the heart of our work is Interactive Conflict Transformation, a participatory approach that facilitates dialogical processes to address not only the immediate manifestation of conflict but also their deep-rooted structural and cultural dimensions.
