Internship at the "SCI Austria" association in Vienna

"Knowing about people who are committed"

Thomas Schallhart reports on his experiences as an intern at SCI Austria

My internship at SCI Austria was an enriching experience. I was able to contribute my skills in various ways and gain new ones. The latter includes, above all, the contact with numerous international partner associations, which I contacted during the course of the internship for possible cooperation.

As part of my internship, I attended a training course in Reykjavík (Iceland) to learn how to organize youth encounters in a European context. I subsequently developed a concept for one for the SCI network's Climate for Peace campaign. A program proposal, possible venues, possible partners and numerous methods for communicating the ecological content to the participants were researched and developed and will be implemented in the coming year.

Part of my internship was to provide technical support to SCI Austria through my experience with web projects. I created a new design for the SCI website and installed WordPress to allow SCI staff to easily edit the website. I also programmed a newsletter that will be sent out with an automated design in the future. This implementation also served the Climate for Peace campaign: a text about the campaign was created, which will be published on the website and in the newsletter at the appropriate time. A large part of the campaign will also take place online.

I found the international structure of the Service Civil International and the openness and enthusiasm with which the activists mostly volunteer within this network particularly exciting.

It's good to know that there are people all over the world who are also committed to something that is important to them - and to the world. I also found the content-related discussion of the topic of climate justice interesting and that was the reason why I was interested in the campaign and the internship in the first place. I study biology and was able to use my scientific background perfectly for the content of the topic.
