What's it like to work in nonprofits? These testimonials provide insight

Would you like to do an internship in a specific organization? Would you like to do meaningful voluntary work abroad? Do you want to do voluntary work in Austria or volunteer in Germany? Are you writing a speculative application for an association?

The scene of non-profit organisations in German-speaking countries is diverse, but people living in the same city and working for the same target group get to know each other quickly. A lot of information about non-profits circulates quickly in these networks of committed people.

New to the scene?

But what happens if you are dealing with social organisations for the first time? Where can you get the information if you don't know anyone who has worked in a similar field? Where do you get the (honest) experiences of people who actually know the everyday working life in non-profit organisations?

Exchange of experience: Reports aboutt social organizations

That is why we have created our collection of experience reports, gathered since 2012 and which we continue to add to. In this section, current and former NGO employees, interns and volunteers tell us about their experiences of working in the non-profit sector. What drives them. What they find difficult. Why they do what they do.

Why these articles are of particular interest to you

Some time ago, the voluntaris association was looking for volunteers for three projects: For a women's and school project in India, for a clothing project in Peru and a youth project in Peru. You would like to know how former volunteers have got on in voluntaris projects before you apply? What they have done, and what they thought of their voluntary service? Then read about it in their reports beforehand:

Teach for Austria, for example, is always looking for fellows. But how have previous volunteers, interns and fellows rated their work with this NGO? If you are interested in Teach for Austria, we highly recommend the following article:

The non-profit organization Light for the World was always looking for new employees. Would you like to find out how a former intern (and now employee) of this NGO experienced the working atmosphere there? No problem!

"
Internship at Light for the World.

Here you'll find all NGO experience reports, clearly sorted by continent in which the work experience was gained.

Would you like to tell us about your own experiences?

Have you yourself done an internship in a non-profit organisation, founded an association or worked for an NPO? We are very happy to hear from anyone who shares their experiences with other committed people.
